Bouillon, medieval castle town on the Semois
Bouillon is a historic town in southern Belgium, situated in the province of Luxembourg, on a bend in the River Semois in the Ardennes. It is known for its impressive medieval castle and its close association with the crusader Godfrey of Bouillon, a key figure in the First Crusade.
History of Bouillon
In the 11th century, Bouillon was the stronghold of the Counts of Ardennes, who derived the title ‘Duke of Bouillon’ from it. In 1096, Godfrey of Bouillon sold the castle to finance his participation in the First Crusade. The town later came under the rule of the Prince-Bishops of Liège, and evolved into a formal duchy in the 16th century. After the French Revolution, Bouillon was annexed by France, before finally becoming part of Belgium in 1831.
