Local markets and events around Bohan
Visiting a local market is one of the best ways to get to know the Ardennes during your holiday. Wallonia has a lively market tradition built around regional products, from honey and goat’s cheese to Semois tobacco and wild mushrooms, and the villages around Bohan regularly host weekly markets, annual fairs and seasonal events.
Weekly markets around Bohan
Just a few kilometres from the holiday home you’ll find several small, authentic markets that are well worth a visit if you’re after regional products or simply the atmosphere of a Walloon village.
Marché du Terroir in Vresse-sur-Semois: every third Friday from April to October, from 17:00 to 20:00 at the Espace Cognaut. Local producers bring honey, cheeses, meat, beer and vegetables to the market. There is also a petting farm for children, live music and a bar with light bites. It is the most enjoyable evening market in the area.
Market in Bouillon: Bouillon hosts several markets throughout the year, including a large annual fair and seasonal events around the castle. Combine a market visit with a walk through the medieval town centre and the impressive fortress.
Other local markets: Gedinne, Bièvre and the surrounding villages regularly hold smaller weekly markets and producer gatherings. Feel free to ask on arrival for the current schedule, as it changes by season.
Annual fairs and seasonal events
The region around Bohan has a strong calendar of seasonal events. The Féeries de Gros-Fays take place in November: an evening market with craft stalls, a winter bar and street entertainment in one of the prettiest villages in Wallonia. In Bouillon, the Fête de la Truite (trout festival), the Fête de la Chasse (hunting fair), the Journée du Fromage (cheese day) and the medieval festival around the castle all offer an authentic Walloon experience. In December, several villages hold Christmas markets.
Regional products you’ll find at the market
The Ardennes region is known for its regional products: local honey from oak forests, goat’s and cow’s milk cheeses from small farms, Ardennes charcuterie such as jambon d’Ardenne and smoked sausage, locally brewed beer, and, as a speciality of this particular valley, the famous Semois tobacco.
Combining markets with your stay
A market visit fits perfectly into a relaxed holiday on the Semois. Most markets are within a short drive, so you can easily combine a morning or evening at the market with a walk, a bike ride or a kayak trip. Ask us for the latest event calendar when you arrive.
