Which birds can you spot in Bohan?
The Semois Valley is a true paradise for nature lovers and birdwatchers. During your stay in our holiday home in Bohan, you can spot a surprising variety of bird species — from colourful kingfishers to impressive birds of prey.
Thanks to the combination of riverbanks, dense forests and open valleys, this region is one of the best places in the Ardennes for birdwatching.
Common birds in Bohan
- Kingfisher (along the Semois): The kingfisher is perhaps the most spectacular sight along the Semois. With its bright blue plumage, it darts low over the water in search of fish.
Best time to spot it: early morning along quiet river bends.
- Buzzard: a medium-sized bird of prey with broad wings that is often seen hovering or circling above the hills around Bohan. It hunts small mammals such as mice. Its meowing call gives away its presence.
- Black woodpecker: This large, entirely black woodpecker lives in old-growth forests. You can often hear it from a distance thanks to its powerful drumming.
- Robin: A familiar sight on forest walks. Particularly noticeable in autumn and winter.
- Long-tailed tit: These small, fluffy birds often move in flocks through bushes and trees.
- Great spotted woodpecker: One of the most common woodpeckers in the Ardennes. Regularly seen during walks in the woods around Bohan.
- Swallows: You can encounter various species of swallows in the Ardennes
- Nuthatch: a small, blue-grey woodland bird which is the only European bird capable of clambering down tree trunks headfirst with equal ease.
- Yellowhammer: a songbird of open landscapes with hedgerows and fields, recognisable by the male’s bright yellow plumage and his distinctive, rhythmic song
- Bullfinch: is a calm, stocky finch found in wooded areas, with the male standing out due to his pinkish-red breast and black head. The female has a grey-brown breast.
- Redstart: a summer visitor with a striking orange tail that breeds on the edges of woods and in gardens
- Red-backed Shrike: a small predatory warbler that impales insects and small prey on thorns
- Dipper: a dark brown river specialist that dives for food in fast-flowing water.
With a bit of luck, you might also see…
- Peregrine Falcon: The peregrine falcon is one of the fastest birds in the world. You have a chance of spotting it in rocky areas along the valley.
- Eagle Owl: Europe’s largest owl lives in remote and quiet areas. It is particularly active at dusk.
- Red kite: an elegant bird of prey with a deeply forked tail that soars over open landscapes in search of carrion and small prey.
- Osprey: a large, globally distributed fish-eater that dives and uses its powerful talons to snatch fish from the water.
